Here's a link to rhymezone.  It's a rhyming dictionary.

Check out this Hanes Ad to see how advertisers used a metaphor to create humor and communicate an idea quickly.

Don't forget to turn in your SCOPE business letter tomorrow.  As you revise, be thinking about:
- adverbs
- transitions
- banished words
- formal letter format

If you lost any of those sheets, they can all be downloaded from the Helpful Tools page.

Finally, before you print out your letter, have a look at Alyssa's use of transitions in her SCOPE letter.  She did a pretty good job using them fluently and with variety.  Thanks for sharing, Alyssa!  View Alyssa's letter here.

It's Poetry Time!

12/1/2010

Take some time to fill out the following poetry survey.  Parents, don't be shy!  Please feel free to fill this out as well.  It will be nice to get some more perspective!

Go to the form here.

One of your homework assignments tonight is to write a conclusion sentence for each of your three drafted paragraphs.

Here are some examples of conclusion sentences that connect the main idea of one paragraph to the main idea of the next paragraph:
  • Through successes and failures, Abraham Lincoln's early experiences contributed to his future success as President of the United States.
  • Not only do statistics support the argument, but a number of personal stories support it as well.
  • Clearly, statistics support the argument, but it is important to remember that each of those numbers is first and foremost a person.

I know this is confusing to some of you, but give it a shot, even if it's hard.  We'll look at some examples tomorrow and you can revise what you've done.

Today we are going to invent something.  Does that sound scary?  It doesn't have to be.  Look around you and think about what is too difficult, too slow, or too inconvenient.  Now fix it.

Look at the following inventions.  What problems did they solve?  What was "broken" before they came along?

1. Wheel
2. Aeroplane
3. Light bulb
4. Internet
5. PCs
6. Telephone
7. Penicillin
8. iPhone
9. Flushing toilet
10. Combustion engine

SCOPE

11/9/2010

Today we are learning about different tools people use to persuade others.  I have narrowed the tools down to five:
  • Statistics
  • Comparisons
  • Observations/Anecdotes
  • Predictions
  • Expert Testimony

...or SCOPE.  One of the main places we see persuasion is in advertising.  Can you find any examples of SCOPE in the following ads?

Movie Posters

11/5/2010

Today, you will be creating a movie poster.  You can be very creative with this project and pretty much take it wherever you want.  You might not even do a movie poster.  Maybe you do more of an advertisement for your province.  The details and design are up to you.  Be creative and take some risks!

You poster must include:
- your logo
- your slogan
- at least one picture of something important or interesting in your province.

Here are some examples of movie posters that have a logo, slogan and picture to get you thinking:

Remember to be typing your Canada paragraph and have it printed out and ready to turn in at the beginning of the day on Friday.

Please do not come to school on Friday and tell me you still need to print your paragraph.  You can print at school on Thursday if needed.  If you need to print at school on Friday, your paragraph will be considered late.  Don't procrastinate!  Plan for technology problems!

Today we will be looking at movie logos from Pixar and Dreamworks and we will decide which ones work and which one's don't work as well.  Which one's incorporate themes from the movie and which one's don't?
