This one might be controversial, but I wanted to share it because I think great conversations and self-awareness can come from it.

Yesterday we started reading a new book called Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry.  Parents, it is an amazing book on so many levels and I strongly recommend that you read it along with your kids.

One of the major themes in ROT,HMC is racism, and so to kick things off I wanted to do a little science experiment.  This weekend, the optional assignment for students and parents is to take this implicit association test for race.

Perhaps not surprisingly, after taking this test most Americans show a moderate preference for white people over black people.  Even black people show a moderate preference for white people.  Why do you think this is?  What are your results?  Do you think they are accurate?  What happens if you take the test again?

The rule about taking this test is that students must take it in the presence of their parents.  It asks for some personal information and I only want students to enter it if their parents are present and approving.  If you don't want to enter your child's information, maybe you could enter the information pertaining to the parent.

We'll let people volunteer to talk about their results on Monday if they so chose.

To take the test, click here.

Here is a video to help you navigate to the testing area:

Hummm, those types of tests are interesting.....I got a "slight" score...I concentrated real hard as I was doing it, like I was trying to get the right answer.....makes me feel bad, because in my heart I know it should be neutral, we are all loved by God equally...so it implies I don't love equally.
